A tiny, secretive insectivore of mossy mountain rainforest. Creeps mouse-like through fern tangles and root masses, most reliably detected by its high-pitched descending song.

Field notes from Clayton Smith

The Fernwren could be up in the mountains, or maybe down on the coast, or maybe its somewhere else, because its not always there. This small mouse like bird can be best found by keeping an ear out for their distinctive call which can alert you to their presence hiding among the ferns along a wet rainforest gully where they are often found tossing leaves over their shoulder in search of snails.
